My Fugal Things

This solo utilizes a small bit of the theme and chorus from Richard Rodgers’ My Favorite Things. I originally intended to perform it on concerts with an arrangement of My Favorite Things and a Bach fugue. I wanted to give audiences that were new to fugues a familiar tune to latch on to while listening to a ‘modern’ fugue that for the most part followed traditional conventions. The Bach fugue would then be performed last in the set of three, and the informed audience could now listen better with a practiced ear. However, this piece works wonderfully alone, and most audience-goers can hang on throughout the work and find the virtuosity in it, while connecting to the American tradition. ~M.C.
