Fugue V in F Minor
Jakob Ludwig Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy (3 February 1809 – 4
November 1847), born and widely known as FELIX
MENDELSSOHN, was a German composer, pianist, organist, and
conductor of the early Romantic period. Mendelssohn's
compositions include symphonies, concertos, piano music, organ
music, and chamber music. His best-known works include the
overture and incidental music for A Midsummer Night's Dream,
the Italian Symphony, the Scottish Symphony, the oratorio St.
Paul, the oratorio Elijah, and the overture The Hebrides, among
others. The melody for the Christmas carol "Hark! The Herald
Angels Sing" is also his.
Heartland Marimba will release adaptations and recordings of all
of the preludes and fugues from Opus 35. This collection includes
six preludes and six fugues:
Prelude and Fugue No. I – E Minor
Prelude and Fugue No. II – D Major
Prelude and Fugue No. III – B Minor
Prelude and Fugue No. IV – Ab Major
Prelude and Fugue No. V – F Minor
Prelude and Fugue No. VI – Bb Major I chose the F Minor Fugue to begin this project as it has been a
source of major inspiration for some time; another keyboard
percussion version that is, not the piano solo. The original version
is lovely of course, however, when I first heard the Safri Duo’s
recording of this fugue on their Goldrush album, I was floored.
The whole album is amazing, and this track encased it in gold for
me! You should seek it out and listen to it repeatedly. Along with
my obsession with old and tricky contrapuntal music, this
recording was the inspiration behind the project to release the
collection.
