Keyboard Confirguation
Chaconne is scored for four marimbists. The pitch ranges of the four marimba parts are as follows:
Marimba I: 3 octaves plus a minor third; from E3 to G6. Fits on a 4.0-octave (C-C) marimba.
Marimba II: 3 octaves plus a major third; from Bb3 to D6. Fits on a 4.3-octave (A-C) marimba.
Marimba III: 3 octaves plus a perfect fourth; from A3 to G6. Fits on a 4.0-octave (C-C) marimba.
Marimba IV: 2 octaves plus a perfect fifth; from C2 to G4. Fits on a 5.0-octave (C-C) marimba.
As the Marimba I and Marimba IV parts fit together on a single 5.0 octave marimba keyboard, it is possible to use only three marimbas. Most of the tie these two parts remain at least an octave apart, but occasionally are closer together. Marimba II and Marimba III require their own keyboard, due to overlapping tessituras of these two parts with the other marimbas.
